UC Will See Variety Of Winter Weather

A mix of winter weather looks likely over the next 24 hours, but the Upper Cumberland will likely not see the worst of the weather across the state.

In a rare winter occurrence, the worst of the winter weather will likely be over west Tennessee and northwestern sections of middle Tennessee. Meteorologist Rob Carolan said the Upper Cumberland could see everything from rain to snow.

“Right now it doesn’t appear that it will be a major ice storm, that once again looks to be more of an icing threat for areas northwest of you in central Kentucky,” Carolan said.

A winter storm warning is in effect for 6pm Sunday through Monday. Freezing drizzle has already been an issue across the region Sunday morning causing icy roads across Overton, Putnam and White County. The region could see sleet and freezing rain through the remainder of Sunday.

Carolan said arctic air continues to filter in to the Upper Cumberland. It is deeper over west and many parts of middle Tennessee where more snow is likely through Monday night. Across the Upper Cumberland, temperatures are warmer in the atmosphere leading to more freezing rain.

“It’s a pretty dynamic system,” Carolan said. “When they get this strong, there’s lots for the model to lock onto.”

For those tired of misty cold weather, Carolan said there is hope of a change in the recent weather pattern.

“Looks like the pattern will start to turn milder and less stormy next week and not as cold,” Carolan said.
