Putnam BOE Considering Sport Facility Repairs

The Putnam County School Board is considering making repairs to the Cookeville High School tennis courts and the Upperman High School baseball field.

Cookeville High School Athletic Director Steve Robbins said most of the tennis court needs come from wear and tear over the 25 years of activity.

“Some of the issues that have surfaced is worn, and there is a few cracks in it,” Robbins said. “Not terrible. It is still playable, but just want some upgrades for the kids and the program. Maybe, some new nets and wind screen. Those type things need to be addressed.”

The repairs to the courts are estimated at $75,000 and the baseball field at $125,000. Director of Schools Corby King said the Upperman ballpark was created with minimum standards and suffers drainage issues. King said a complete redo will be required.

Upperman High School was built on a swamp, so rainfall makes the field unplayable most of the spring time. King said the money needed for repairs will likely be available through COVID funds allowing some spending flexibility.

Robbins said no schedule changes have been needed due to the shape of the tennis courts. The Cookeville High School tennis team began practices this month.
