Clay County will use a $250,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Health to renovate the health department’s basement.
County Mayor Dale Reagan said this has been a long time need, and the offices and storage space within the basement have been underutilized. Reagan said the need for expanding the usable space in the health department has been emphasized by the pandemic.
“Where that they can utilize a lot of the space down there for their things, especially since this COVID and all that has hit and everything,” Reagan said. “We’ve just got so much other stuff that we have to take care of and everything. So, it’s going to be some more room for them as well.”
Reagan said there are five office spaces that have never been utilized in the health department’s basement. Reagan said there will also be work to replace ceiling tiles and cover up exposed plumbing.
“That will open up the opportunity, I know our building inspector that does our permits, we’ve got him down there right now,” Reagan said. “One of those rooms will be renovated so that he’ll have a better place, and a little more room.”
Reagan said community groups and law enforcement use this space in the health department, as well. He said there will be a renovated conference room and a better environment for meetings.
“Our THP they have their post station down there, we also have the AA group that goes there and meets,” Reagan said. “We’re wanting to redo that for them, as well.”
Clay County is currently accepting bids on this renovation project. Bids are set to be opened and read on January 12.
