Dale Hollow Lake Water Levels Present Dangers For Winter Boaters

As Dale Hollow Lake’s water levels fall over the winter, officials are warning boat goers of dangerous shallows.

The current water levels sit at 638 feet, 13 under the summer average. While this decrease comes naturally, Conservation Ranger Greg Nivens said the whole outlook of the lake changes with the seasons.

“Just be cautious out there,” Nivens said. “You could hit a mud flat out there and run a bank and dry dock your boat real quick if you don’t stay within the channels.”

Nivens said navigation buoys are in place to steer boats away from rock outcroppings. Nivens said if you plan on going out on the lake, create a float plan with your destination and an estimated arrival time.

“If something does happen, they can come looking for you,” Nivens said. “While you are out there, I recommend wearing a life jacket at all times. If you are operating the boat, keep that kill switch attached in case something does happen.”

Cell phones, flare guns, survival kits and warm apparel are also recommended while winter boating. Nivens said while going up stream, keep the red buoy to your right side, and left going down stream.

Nivens said 632 feet is the lowest he has seen the levels dip during his time at Dale Hollow Lake.
