Work to refurbish Sparta’s sewer pumping station at Wilson Sporting Goods is set to begin next spring.
The Board of Alderman Thursday awarded the $272,000 bid to John T. Hall Construction. City Administrator Brad Hennessee said Industrial Park developments have outgrown the current station.
“The Hormann manufacturing facility is what really brought it to light a couple of years ago,” Hennessee said. “When the research was down, it was found to be undersized but in need of repair, also.”
Hennessee said the new station will add enough capacity for future industrial developments. The old pump station was installed over 25 years ago.
“Industrial Park was there, but there has been a lot of development inside that since then,” Hennessee said. “So, it is a combination of that needing to be refurbished as well as made to handle more capacity.”
An Appalachian Regional Commission grant awarded to the city in 2019 will pay for 90 percent of the work. Materials for the project could take up to 15 weeks to be delivered.
“We will notify (John T. Hall Construction). They will order all the components to rebuild the station,” Hennessee said. “The way I understand, it is a three to four month lead time on the components. Then, they will complete the project.”
The Board of Alderman has discussed this replacement for several months. Hennessee said this year’s construction cycle caused a slight delay.
“All of our project work kind of came together at the end of the construction cycle for us this year,” Hennessee said. “That was a little bit of a disadvantage for us, but we worked our way through that now and can start preparing for next year.”
