Byrdstown Eagles Cove Water Line Project Begins

Work on the Eagles Cove Road water line project in Byrdstown got started last week.

Consulting Engineer Nathaniel Green said a few hundred feet of four inch line has already been laid.

“This particular project is not going to take a long time to complete,” Green said. “So, depending on how much they got to fight with the existing utilities and whether they encounter any rock or anything like that, they can probably be down with that portion of the project in a months time.”

Green said after the line replacements, the contractor will start changing about 150 plastic service lines to cooper. This project is a continuation of line replacements in 2012. Mayor Sam Gibson said the long term goal is to have better water pressure from Eagles Cove to Star Point.

“We would really to like if there is any way to go from the Y to Starpoint and eliminate that crossing field line that we have down there,” Gibson said. “That thing could be spewing 20 feet high for a year, and we would never know it, because nobody ever sees it.”

The city now has until March to complete the project to apply for the next round of Community Development Block Grants. About 800 homes will benefit from the increased water pressure. Byrdstown has been awarded the state grant twice since 2017. The first used to rehabilitate the water system in the Bloomington area.

Green said said the Star Point water line would be a separate project in the future.

“We had look at ways to replace an existing water line that traverses through the woods,” Green said. “Instead of trying to do that where the employees could not keep up with the line, we are going to try and go in another direction.”
