First Lady Lee Fall Creek Falls Service Project

First Lady Maria Lee will participate in a service project at Fall Creek Falls Thursday to build 50 picnic tables to encourage outdoor learning and working.

The park camp site recently received a grant to install fiber cable Internet. Lee said the picnic tables provide an outdoor area for people to utilize the connectivity.

“For families to use for camping and for work and for schools, playing,” Lee said. “You know in these days with virtual school and people working from home remotely, getting outdoors is a huge plus.”

Lee said the project is a part of her Tennessee Serves initiative. This month’s focus to engage citizens are the Tennessee State Parks. A mixture of high schools students, park employees and public officials will volunteer together to construct the tables.

“There are some volunteers that are coming, and I know that they have extended for their Tennessee Achieves service credit,” Lee said. “There will be some different public officials, and of course, the park rangers.”

Saturday is National Public Lands Day, which celebrates volunteers helping to preserve parks and historic sites. Lee said the need for volunteers to help keep Tennessee’s parks beautiful is always high.

“There is a lot of effort and work that goes into keeping parks up,” Lee said. “A lot of volunteers are always needed. It is important to us and to me to keep that in the fore front of people’s mind.”

Lee will be at 2009 Village Camp Road Spencer, TN at 1:30 p.m.
