Parks and Recreation Director John Ross Albertson met Monday with Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to review the Putnam Sports Complex expansion.
He said the expansion consists of adding two new fields. One located at the old airport hanger off North Washington. The other north of the two existing fields. Along with the additions, a new main entrance will be built on North Washington.
“We want these fields, and we need these fields,” Albertson said. “It has become to the point that it is not just a want. It is a need. We definitely have issues of overcrowding at the sports complex that we are hoping these two fields will help alleviate.”
Albertson said the new fields will help recruit sporting tournaments to the area. Plans for the expansion were submitted to TDEC on Tuesday. If approved, the county would be able to put the project out to bid.
“I think it helps us two fold,” Albertson said. “It definitely of course helps with our local need for our youth sports. Both soccer associations we have and lacrosse as well. That will definitely help tremendously with their spacing needs. But, it will also help us in recruiting other tournaments.”
The sports complex has 86 acres of land. Albertson said the cross county track and six fields make up the majority of the land use. A walking trail and playground were also recently installed.
