Monterey Disaster Team Waits For Hurricane Laura

The Monterey Lions Club Disaster Response Team will respond to its 78th disaster once Hurricane Laura strikes.

The team is currently at Shreveport, Louisiana waiting. Leader Ken Hall said after the hurricane passes, his team will respond to the areas in most need.

“Once we see where the destruction is, then I will be calling in the remaining members of the team to go to wherever landfall is made or whatever tornadoes spin off this thing.”

Hall said the team has a rescue boat, tractor and chainsaw ready to assist homeowners. Hall said Monterey’s response team will mainly clear roadways for emergency personal.

“We show up with the equipment, and then, volunteer’s from the area, and even volunteers that volunteered with us before in other disasters, will come to Bossier City and help us.”

Hall said response teams across the nation are gathered near the gulf. They will coordinate which team goes where. Once the response call goes out, Hall said any responder that worked with the team in the past will receive the notice.

“We will look at the damage, see what we are capable of doing, and then notify the rest of the team members, which includes the core five people,” Hall said. “Plus, the notification goes out to people who helped us in the past, which is about thirty people.”

Already, hundreds of electric companies are stationed near Shreveport for an expected mass power outage.
