Wednesday goes to the dogs-literally.
National Dog Day is a day to celebrate the bond between owners and their furry friends. White County Animal Shelter Kennel Attendant Sarah Lawson said pet dogs are just like children.
“I mean you would celebrate children’s birthdays and their holidays,” Lawson said. “I feel like National dog Day is just national every dog’s birthday.”
Lawson said she has four pitbulls who are treated as members of the family. She said dog owners should do something special for their pets in commemoration of National Dog Day.
There are nearly 20 dogs up for adoption at the animal shelter. Lawson said the shelter does something special for the dogs every Wednesday.
“So all the dogs get walked and they get to play in the play yards,” Lawson said. “Our volunteers come and walk them.”
The holiday began in 2004 to raise awareness for dogs in shelters and to encourage adoption.
