The Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation is rebuilding from the March tornado.
The tornado left significant damage to the Cookeville facility’s outside walls, roof, and portions of the inside. General Manager Jimmy Gregory said construction crews began reconstruction last week.
“They’re mainly concentrating on the inside right now, then they’ll move to the outside,” Gregory said. “[There will be] a complete new roof, all the brick will have to come off the building and be replaced. It’s a four month estimated construction time.”
Gregory said the rebuilding project could cost at least $1 million. He said the insurance settlement covers damage to the main building and two other metal storage buildings. The old warehouse building at 1789 West Broad Street was destroyed in the storm. Three office trailers sit at that property for the customer service clerks.
“It’s not only the reconstruction but the COVID issues all hit us at the same time,” Gregory said. “It’s been a significant challenge to continue our day to day operations from the Cookeville office.”
Not only has this been a hardship for UCEMC employees, but also for the members. Gregory asked for patience and understanding as reconstruction efforts continue. He hopes employees can move back in the office by November.
