Local schools have been closed for more than five months, and White County School local maintenance teams are busy getting the buildings ready.
Maintenance Department Director Randy Alley said thanks to schools being closed since March, more repairs have been done.
“It’s been good for the maintenance department to be able to get into some situations that you would put off because there’s always someone in that room,” Alley said. “This has been a good time for us to fix some problems.”
Alley said repairs to roofs, plumbing systems, and central heat and air units were possible due to student absence. He said the department deep cleaned all facilities since March.
“We’re cleaning even if we don’t need to clean if that makes sense,” Alley said. “We’re overdoing it at this point. [We’re] looking into different aspects of cleaning through our air conditioning systems and ionization.”
Grant money is being used to fund cleaning equipment to make sanitizing easier, Alley said.
Changes for the maintenance department include a more rigorous cleaning schedule than last year, and mandatory mask wear when entering a building.
