Five Putnam County art teachers will attend the 2020 Tennessee Arts Academy.
The Tennessee Arts Academy is a week long training course for art teachers. Normally hosted on Belmont University’s campus, the educational session will take place virtually this year.
Curriculum Supervisor Sharon Anderson said this is the largest representative group Putnam has had in over five years of being involved with the Academy.
“We’re very pleased that Michael Choate, Amy Scott, Lori Sexton, Clarissa Miller, and Mary Bastin all stepped up and said ‘hey, we want to do this,'” Anderson said. “We’re always blessed by our teachers always stepping up and seeking out the best training.”
Anderson said over 325 public and private teachers across the state will participate in this week long seminar this summer.
“This is a tremendous honor for these teachers because our Tennessee Arts Academy is one of the premier training institutes for our K-12 arts educators.”
Lori Sexton is a current teacher of the year; Clarissa Miller is a Capshaw teacher; Mary Bastin and Amy Scott are active in arts education in the school system and surrounding community; and Michael Choate is involved with many Cookeville High School productions. Anderson said she knows these five teachers will return with invaluable information for the school system.
This year’s theme at the Tennessee Arts Academy is “Empowering Arts Teachers in a Virtual World.” The Academy has worked to educate art teachers for 34 years. Sessions will begin July 12.
