Sparta could be a possible site for the Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery.
The Executive Subcommittee of the Tennessee State Building Commission considered a 127-acre plat during its Monday meeting.
The commission agenda said the land purchase would help an under-served part of the state. It would also place a veterans cemetery within 70 miles of every veteran in the state, according to the commission.
Previous attempts to purchase land in Cumberland County fell through. In April, the state thought it had a deal for 93 acres adjacent to I-40, but the verbal agreement fell through.
Because the funds for the Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery was passed on a previous year’s budget, according to the Department of Veterans Services, it will remain unaffected by any of this year’s budget cuts.
The commission will next consider the Sparta land.
