Watchers of the Dale Hollow Lake Eagle Cam will have to find a new way to eagle-watch.
Sunset Marina Manager Tom Allen said the tree containing the nest was struck by lightening and fell. Luckily, the eaglets, Obey and River, and their parents were spotted flying and seem to be unharmed.
“We do not think they were injured or impacted, because the young eagles, there was two of them, ” Allen said. “The eaglets were about to be ready to fledge. They were almost to the point of leaving the nest anyways. They were branching out of the nest and learning to fly.”
Allen said the tree that fell was several hundred feet tall. The Dale Hollow Lake Marina Association wants to install a new eagle cam in the future. That will depend on when and where the eagles rebuild.
“Obviously, it is going to be up to these eagles, if they rebuild a nest in an area that can be accessed with a camera,” Allen said. “We are hopeful we can reconvene our partnership with Twin Lakes and the U.S. Corps of Engineers.”
The Dale Hollow Lake Eagle Cam is made possible by a partnership with the Dale Hallow Lake Marina Association, Twin Lakes and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Twin Lakes provides the camera and live streaming capabilities.
Allen said boaters on the Dale Hollow Lake first discovered the tree fell and submitted a picture to the eagle cam Facebook page proving the lightening strike. An exact date for when the tree fell is unknown.
