Supermarket chain Food city continues to work with developers on a Cookeville location.
President and CEO Steven Smith said they are hoping for a spring 2021 opening.
“We’re anxious and excited to become part of the Cookeville business community and we’re still working to finalize the deal with the developer,” Smith said. “We’d love to see this.”
Retail Strategies, a national consulting company, identified Food City as one of some 50 chain stores that wanted to build facilities in the county. The City of Cookeville began working with the company in 2014.
Smith traveled to Cookeville in the aftermath of the March tornado to donate money to the Cookeville-Putnam County Tornado Relief Fund. At the time, Smith said he was excited at the opportunities to serve Putnam County.
Food City operates 123 locations in four states including Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The privately-held company is based in Abingdon, VA.
