Clay County Commissioners unanimously approved a new two-year contract with the city of Celina to provide emergency ambulance service to county residents.
The new agreement includes a $30,000 annual increase.
“I think we’ve got our backs against the wall right now,” Commissioner Bryan Coons said. “If we don’t pass this tonight, we’re going to be without ambulance service.”
Several commissioners said the county should explore other options once the COVID-19 outbreak passes.
“All we have to do is give a 90-day notice if we find another option,” Commissioner Timmie Scott said.
Then, Celina Mayor Tonya Spears spoke up. She told commissioners that the ambulance service is operating at a $14,174 deficit.
“We are carrying it right now,” Spears said.
Several commissioners then spoke up about the excellent service the city has provided.
