The Town of Livingston’s municipal election will be held as scheduled on June 3.
Election Administrator Craig Story said the Election Commission voted to go ahead with the election, reversing a decision made last month to explore moving the election to August.
“They voted Friday to go ahead and continue on, and not to pursue any further action at this time,” Story said. “Of course, we’re going to monitor to see how things stay in the county and to make sure we don’t have just a bad outbreak of the COVID-19 virus between now and election day.”
The Town of Livingston voted to proceed with the election shortly after the Election Commission voted to postpone in March.
Story said moving the election would have taken a court order.
“The election was always a go until a court with jurisdiction said to postpone it,” Story said. “Early voting is getting ready to begin in a couple of weeks. The meeting Friday was just to update the commissioners and to look and see where we were at. We’re having to make some additional preparations to get ready.”
With the election taking place so soon after the state’s reopening, Story said they will take extra precautions at voting sites.
“We’re going to, of course, practice social distancing,” Story said. “We’re going to ask people to keep some distance between them and any other voters there. We’re going to have hand sanitizer available at the door, and we ask that people use the sanitizer going in and coming out. That’s for the protection of the people coming in to vote and also for the staff.”
Early voting for the Livingston Municipal Election is May 14-29. Livingston Mayor Curtis Hayes is running unopposed, while four people are running for three alderman seats.
