Tennessee Tech President Dr. Phil Oldham said his leadership team will be looking to get the Tech campus reopened over the next several weeks.
“We want to make sure we do that in a safe manner,” Oldham said. “So we’re taking our time to look at all those issues.”
Governor Bill Lee has announced a gradual reopening of the economy beginning next week. He said, however, social distancing will need to be employed for some time. Oldham called it a “slow and steady” move toward reopening.
Testing, additional cleaning, housing guidelines, and the look of classwork will all be examined as the campus prepares for August and September. Oldham said no CDC guidelines have been released about university reopening.
“Our sense is students want to get back to a campus experience,” Oldham said. “We just need to make sure we can provide that in as safe an environment as possible.”
Oldham announced last week that summer session one will be done online. He said Tuesday that the second summer session might be some type of combination in-person and online. That session begins June 17.
“We have not made a determination,” Oldham said. “We’re hopeful to have students back on campus by that time.”
Oldham said registrations for summer session one appears to be on track with summer, 2019 enrollment. The fall enrollment numbers are down a little from fall, 2019, but Oldham said the university’s process is about a week behind where it should be.
