Gainesboro Working To Improve Downtown

The Gainesboro Downtown Committee is accepting grant applications for the revitalization of the town’s historic downtown district.

Committee Chair Jordan Hunter said it’s about more than the aesthetics of the buildings.

“Our main goal with that is obviously to bring a little bit of new life to the buildings, but also hopefully encourage people to invest in their buildings with a 75 percent match on anything that is an approved project and within the historical guidelines of that region of that downtown area we’re hoping to breathe a little bit of life and also economic development back on, into our downtown,” Hunter said.

The grant includes $95,000 in money to improve buildings. Local business owners can apply for the grants from $1,000 to a maximum of $50,000.

“Helping these building owners and business owners invest in their businesses by supplementing some cash in with their investment and then also I think improving the look of the downtown is the goal,” Hunter said.

Hunter said local business owners or building owners can help the economic vitality of the community with the grants.

“We’re trying to really promote tourism to Gainesboro and Jackson County and you know all those other communities and Gainesboro is really in the heart of the county so having a good, solid looking downtown area for people to walk around and enjoy is very important to the city,” Hunter said.

Gainesboro downtown business and building owners can apply by calling (931) 268-9444. Deadline to apply is May 5.
