Clay County teachers are reaching out to students across the county to make sure they are well and to show them they are missed.
School Director Matt Eldridge said school staff wants to ensure students are taken care of academically and physically.
“We’re going to take care of them academically and even work physically with them to do lessons on physical education and things like that,” Eldridge said. “We want to take care of them for the betterment for the whole child if we can.”
Eldridge said the school system is taking necessary safety precautions when visiting students.
With a month away from school, Eldridge said the system will provide video lessons online. For those students without internet, packets will be available.
“It’s still not going to be the same as being with that child but we’ve got some teachers reading books, doing lessons inside the classroom just to show them ‘hey we miss you here, here’s your classroom, hope you guys are doing well.’ We’re reaching out to them those ways, we’re trying to make phone calls to all the students [to] let the teachers call everyone in their class,” Eldridge said.
Eldridge said the school system continues to offer free meals for students.
With the situation changing rapidly, Eldridge said he maintains contact with the Commissioner Of Education regularly to ensure the school system can plan at least a week ahead.
Clay County High School’s graduation and prom are both postponed until further notice.
