Monterey Implementing Aid for Seniors

The Town of Monterey will begin a crisis intervention program for senior citizens and people unable to leave their homes.

Monterey Police Chief Bill Randolph said he and Mayor Bill Wiggins thought the program would be a good way to let their citizens know that the city cared about their needs.

“We have a lot of seniors that live in this area, and a lot of them are scared to get out of the house or are sick and don’t want to get out of the house and take a chance of catching this virus,” Randolph said. “When we talked we thought it would be a good way to give back to them and let them know, ‘Hey, you don’t have to leave the house. We’ll come to you and take care of you and make sure you don’t have any needs that aren’t being met.'”

Randolph said the program is running through the police department, and officers will assist seniors between calls or during slow periods.

“They can call the police department and let us know they don’t want to get out of the house or are not able to get out of the house,” Randolph said. “If they need some groceries or some medicine, I’ve already talked to the grocery stores and they will have the option of either giving us a list or they can call the store and put their order in, and the store will fill their order. We’ll come by pick up their money, go pick up their groceries, and then deliver them back to them.”
