Beware FEMA Identity Theft

A new kind of scam affecting tornado victims across the region: identify theft to claim your FEMA benefits.

“There have been some fraud where others have applied on behalf of another applicant,” FEMA Public Affairs Specialist Cheria Brown said. “We take that very seriously.”

Brown said it’s important when you file for assistance through FEMA that you let the specialist know this is your first time applying. Each applicant receives a registration number to carry them through the entire process.

If you believe you have been a victim of identity theft through the FEMA process, call 1-866-720-5721. You can also contact the Putnam County Sheriffs Department.

“There are those who like to pray on those who are vulnerable,” Brown said. “This is a vulnerable time.”

The FEMA Disaster Relief Center remains closed because of COVID-19 concerns. However, you can still process your FEMA tornado requests online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling (800) 621-3362.
