Jack Ray, the longtime chairman of the Bank of Putnam County, passed away Friday at his home.
The Monterey resident died at the age of 84.
Ray was a lawyer, a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School.
He celebrated the grand opening of the new Monterey branch in August, 2019.
Ray’s grandfather, W.B. Ray, started Bank Of Monterey in 1901. The bank grew to serve customers throughout the Upper Cumberland. Ray served as president when the Bank of Monterey merged with Bank of Cookeville in 1977. In 1980, management established the BPC Corporation as a holding company for the bank. In 1986, BPC acquired Bank of Cumberland County.
The Ray family has remained involved in the bank business as Jack Ray reduced his involvement in recent years. His daughter Elizabeth has been a long-time leader at the bank and serves as vice chair.
