Clay Co. Sesquicentennial Celebration Coming

Clay County is celebrating its 150th Anniversary June 13 through the 20 in downtown Celina and at the Clay County Courthouse.

Melissa White, chair of the Clay County Historic Preservation Committee, said she needs the public’s help preparing for the event.

“We have two major exhibits for the rooms in the historic Clay County Courthouse,” White said. “The first one will open on Memorial Day weekend and it’s called Clay County at war. We have some items in an archive that we collected for another project, and we have had some people already donate some items we have copied and digitized for that exhibit, and we’re hoping to get more.”

White said that exhibit will run from the Memorial Day weekend until June 20. Another exhibit planned is a history of schools in the county.

“The other one is a history of Clay County schools exhibit, and we would just like anyone to share anything from their old school experience before 1970, especially concentrating on schools that may not exist anymore,” White said. “It could be anything from artifacts like desks or teacher memoirs to documents like grade cards or anything else related to the school experience.”
