Debris Burning Begins At Landfill; Ban Remains

A county-wide burn ban remains in place in Putnam County since last week’s storm.

Putnam County Fire Chief Tom Brown said the ban is in effect to help with tracking debris from the storm.

“The debris needs to be cataloged, needs to be photographed, and we need to know where it’s at,” Brown said. “We will lift it in the near future. In fact, we’ve already been authorized to burn at the landfill. A lot of debris is going to be burned, just not right now.”

Brown said he expects the ban to be lifted sometime later this week or the beginning of next week.

The Putnam County Landfill has extended its hours to 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. seven days a week while the cleanup effort continues. The county estimates that over 400 residences were damaged, with 100 homes destroyed outright.
