At least three people have died after a tornado touched down in Putnam County early Tuesday morning.
Sheriff Eddie Farris said the tornado struck between the city limits of Cookeville and Baxter. He confirmed at least three fatalities but said there could be more.
The hardest hit areas appear to be Charleton Square, Plunk Whitson, Echo Valley, Prosperity Point, N. Mcbroom Chapel, and Double Springs Utility District.
“Power is out in those areas,” Farris said. “We are currently going house to house by foot to check on everyone in those areas. Please keep the roadways free while we are still rendering first aid, locating lost individuals and clearing the roads.”
Farris said the area South of Buffalo Valley and north of Peach Orchard appear to be OK.
Putnam County emergency officials have opened an emergency shelter at the Cookeville Community Center on Carlan Drive. You can call 931-646-INFO for information and updates on family members in the area,
