Algood Approves Bond Resolution For Expansion Project

The bond allocation for Algood’s long-awaited water and sewer expansion project received final reading approval Tuesday.

City Administrator Keith Morrison said he’s hoping to have the project out for bids by the end of this month.

“The water will start at Trinity (Church), go down Main Street, connect over at First Avenue and also at Mirandy Road, tying the whole system together,” Morrison said. “We’re also adding hydrants downtown for additional fire protection, and also fixing a deteriorating line downtown that’s been in since the 60s.”

The $2.1 million project will also extend sewer from Brookside to Old Walton Circle, Arbor Place, and Oakhaven.

“It will finish those plan of services requirements established for those subdivisions that were annexed several years ago,” Morrison said.

The bond totals $1.89 million and carries a 40-year term. Morrison said the city will put an initial $210,000 toward the project.

“We can get out of it (bond) early if we need to and prepay without penalty,” Morrison said.

Morrison said the city council may approve a bid for the project by April. He estimates construction to take less than a year to complete.
