Algood’s long-awaited sewer expansion project will get underway this year.
City Council approved the initial $1.89 million bond allocation for the project during Tuesday night’s meeting.
Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said the work will complete a plan of services for areas annexed into the city more than ten years ago.
“This has been something that we’ve been working on for quite a while,” Chapman-Fowler said. “I’m glad to see that we are getting around to that. I get questions quite often about when we are going to complete this plan of services, so I’m glad that we’re on track with that. It would be terrific to get it finished within this calendar year.”
The $2.1 million project will expand sewer services to homes in the Brookside area. Main Street will see a new water line installed as well.
The previous council approved the project in 2017 and the city began the easement phase almost two years ago.
Citizens have 20 days to object to the bond allocation for the project. City Administrator Keith Morrison said the city will proceed with the project if no one objects.
“By the end of February I think we could be out for bid, assuming the final (bond) resolution passes and everything is good,” Morrison said. “I would think by April we should be able to approve a construction company and move forward with it.”
Morrison said the project will take less than a year to complete. Algood will provide $210,000 towards the final project price.
