A group of rock climbing enthusiasts continue their efforts to provide easier access to the Meadow Creek lake Park rock climbing area.
Monterey Cultural Administrator Julie Bohannon said the project has nearly completed.
“Eighty percent of that trail to the cliffs at Meadow Creek Park is complete,” Bohannon said. “We’ve got to do some clearing on the lot, and then we’re going to have a big ribbon cutting for that when it gets completed.”
The access point for the rock climbing area sits off of Highway 62 on Connor Drive, about 6.3 miles away from downtown. The city purchased the 6 acre rock climbing area last spring for $42,000.
“They have built a natural stone staircase and a wooden latter with a little balcony,” Bohannon said. “It’s gorgeous.”
Monterey used a $4,000 conservation grant from the Access Fund to construct the system of trails.
In addition, crews continue working to construct a mountain bike trail in a different area of the 288-acre park. The city had planned a volunteer work day for the project on Saturday, but rain and storms prevented that from happening.
