Smith County deputies fatally shot a man who allegedly attacked a woman Thursday morning.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified the deceased as 38-year-old Gary Wayne Madewell.
Preliminary information indicates the incident happened at 6 a.m. when deputies responded to a stabbing at a home on Boyd Lane in Carthage.
A press release said deputies observed Madewell in possession of the knife when they arrived at the home. For reasons still under investigation, deputies fired upon Madewell when the situation escalated. Officials said he died at the scene.
The TBI said agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in support of the ongoing investigation. The TBI will pass along collected evidence to the District Attorney General for his review and consideration.
No law enforcement officers suffered injuries during the incident. The woman received medical treatment at a hospital.
