Jamestown City Council has voted to lower the speed limit for part of Main Street.
Mayor Lyndon Baines said the measure sets a 25 mph speed limit from Church Street to the South Main Street Baptist Church.
“We’re getting more businesses downtown and the speed limit on Main Street has been 35 for years,” Baines said. “A lot of people cross Main Street to visit the businesses, so we decided to lower the speed limit to make it safer for the pedestrians.”
Baines said he also wants to see a speed reduction on Highway 52 from city hall to the depot. He said a final decision for that request must come from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).
“TODT is going to come over after the first of the year to do a study on 52,” Baines said. “They don’t see any problem with it, and they agree with me that it would be a safety measure to help pedestrians.”
If approved by TDOT, Baines said that area of Highway 52 would also have a 25 mph speed limit.
