Algood Approves Rezoning For RV Storage Facility

Algood City Council has approved a rezoning ordinance allowing a new storage facility to locate off Highway 111.

City Administrator Keith Morrison said he expects Rost Brothers Storage to have an impact on the city’s economy.

“We don’t currently have any RV storage to this caliber. We’ve got some uncovered RV storage that’s just an open lot,” Morrison said. “There are units like this farther up on 111 and they’re building them as quick as they can throw them up, and filling them up as quickly. So this is a growing need. I don’t think it’s going to hurt us.”

Morrison said the business will bring in additional tax revenue with RV owners buying groceries and filling up gas.

“It will generate additional revenue,” Morrison said. “The commercial property having the structure on it is going to create additional revenue, so it is going to bring in some extra money.”

The ordinance rezones 5.23 acres of property on East Main Street from low-density residential and general commercial to light industrial. First reading approval came despite the Algood Planning Commission’s recommendation to deny the request.

Algood Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said during last month’s meeting that she did have concerns about owners not using the property as proposed. Rost Brothers Storage Representative Michael Savage said the company has drafted a grant of restrictive covenant.

“Indicating it (property) would be used only for the purpose we said it would be used for,” Savage said. “They’re (Rost Brothers) are willing to be bound by that.”

Algood City Council approved the second and final reading of the rezoning during Tuesday night’s meeting.
