The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has bid out a multimillion-dollar project for improving the the Jamestown Municipal Airport.
Jamestown Mayor Lyndon Baines said the bid opening will take place in early January.
“We’re thinking that we should start work sometime in April or March. They’ll be redoing the runway and making our taxiways longer,” Baines said. “We’re doing some stuff on our own…clearing out trees at the South end of the runway. Once we get all that done, they’ll be coming in to work on it.”
The FAA awarded Jamestown $6.7 million through its Airport Improvement Program earlier this year. Two other Tennessee airports received money from the program.
Baines said the application process began under former Mayor Darlene Monday Davis.
“[I] went back and tried to get some more work done on it. And I went to Memphis to the FAA regional office,” Baines said. “I have also been to Washington D.C. to talk to some representatives from Tennessee to try to help me. I went to Nashville to TDOT Aeronautics and they have helped us out tremendously. It’s been a long process.”
The grant does not require any matching funds from the city.
