School Board Discusses Club Sports Participation Request

The Putnam County School Board may consider allowing students at a local private school to participate in club sports.

Superintendent Jerry Boyd said he recently received the request from the headmaster at Highland Rim Academy.

“His original reason for contacting me was something we’ve already discussed about Highland Rim students participating in sports at Cookeville High School,” Boyd said. “But he had talked with TSSAA and they said with recent changes they won’t allow co-ops between non-public and public. So, his request was, ‘can we have a discussion about club sports?’ So his kids might could play lacrosse if they wanted to.”

Boyd said the request would apply to at least 10 students at Highland Rim. Any agreement approved by the board would not apply to Highland Rim students living outside Putnam County.

“It was his request and I told him I would share it with the board,” Boyd said. “We only have two club sports. We have lacrosse and swimming. Those are the only two that are not under the TSSAA umbrella.”

The request might be added to the board of education’s November meeting.
