Monterey Rail Trail Extension Expected To Resume On Monday

Monterey hopes to see work resume on Monday for it’s rail trail extension project.

Cultural Administrator Julie Bohannon said a number of factors have delayed the project since it first began in April.

“The weather has not cooperated. Every time we get it dried out enough it seems like we get another big rain storm,” Bohannon said. “The water table is still pretty high, but there was also some illness with the contractor.”

City officials discussed the project during a meeting with contractors on Friday. That meeting determined that a few adjustments would need to be made to some pipes and lines in the area.

“Everybody got everything coordinated about where the pipes and lines are and what kind of drainage we need to make the project go a little faster,” Bohannon said.

Bohannon said she expects the project to resume on Monday.

“It should go fairly quickly once we get started. Of course, they are calling for more torrential rain, so we will see how that goes,” Bohannon said. “Hopefully, very soon we will have a little bit of an extension.”

The 1,000-foot expansion from Poplar Street to Oak Street will make the trail more than one mile in length.
