Byrdstown Considering Structure For Public Events

Byrdstown officials are considering the idea of creating a structure within city limits to for public events.

Mayor Sam Gibson said a permanent structure would be a step up from the tent they currently use at the park.

“We’ve got a big tent that the city owns and we put that up each time anyone needs a tent. Relay for Life, the Independence Day celebration, there’s a few other things people use the tent for,” Gibson said. “If we had a structure there that was stationary, we wouldn’t have to put [the tent] up or down. We could probably make it a little bigger [and] a little safer.”

Gibson discussed the possibility with the city’s board of aldermen and other officials Monday evening.

After what Gibson considered a successful Independence Day celebration by the city, he said a pole barn structure would suit their needs.

“Then people could use it more for activities such as reunions, family get-togethers, just different things,” Gibson said. “We call it the ‘city activities park’, and the reason we do is because we want as many activities as people want to have as long as they’re organized, they call in, let us know, get on the schedule and take care of things, then that’s what it’s for. It’s for the people to use.”

Gibson did not give a timeline for the proposal, but did state during the meeting a pole barn structure would only cost the city the price of materials.
