UC Habitat For Humanity Looking For Overton County Lots

Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity wants to construct new homes in Overton County.

Community Outreach Coordinator Trent Carter said the organization is seeking available lots to build houses for families in need.

“We’ve been trying to get established up there for about two years and it’s come time for us to start building in Overton County,” Carter said. “We’ve just been looking for some donated or affordable lots to acquire so that we can get some new homeowners and build new homes in Overton County.”

Carter said Habitat will likely start their expansion into Overton County by constructing homes in Livingston.

“We are wanting to get them in the city limits and hopefully next to a road because we’re not really ready to build any new infrastructure or anything,” Carter said. “Hopefully it has water lines, electrical hookups and stuff so we wouldn’t have to build anything new there. We are willing to look kind of outside the Livingston city limits and in the Rickman area.”

Carter said not only would the new home benefit low-income families, but the county would also benefit as a whole.

“We can help more people, but also we feel that by bringing new homeowners into Overton County, it’ll help them as well,” Carter said. “Bringing in new people brings in new business and stuff like that. It shows we’re here to stay and and that we really want to improve the quality of life for lots of people.”

The organization officially changed its name from the Putnam County Habitat for Humanity earlier this year to reflect its expansion into Overton County.
