‘Words On Wheels’ Serving Hundreds Of Putnam County Kids

The Putnam County School System’s ‘Words on Wheels’ mobile library bus has already served hundreds of students within its first two weeks.

Baxter resident Brian Edwards said the bus gives children like his five-year-old daughter a chance to learn throughout the summer.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for parents who maybe can’t get around to getting as many books,” Edwards said. “The kids don’t get hindered this way. They still have a chance to see a whole bunch of different books that they may not have been exposed to otherwise.”

PreK-5 Curriculum Supervisor Jill Ramsey said the mobile library has already made a positive impact on students.

“Kids are excited about reading. They’re excited about picking out a book and their parents have been great bringing them to read stories and get involved,” Ramsey said. “It’s been a great thing and we hope it continues the rest of the summer.”

Edwards said the bus also allows parents an opportunity to connect with their children.

“It’s a good opportunity for her to branch out and not be afraid to try new books,” Edwards said. “If she doesn’t get one she likes this time, she’ll definitely get one next time. It’s also a great event just to bond with your kids, I think. You’re going to see other kids, other parents that are in the same boat as you and meet people in the same situation.”

Ramsey estimates over 126 children were served in its first week with an additional 200-plus this week. ‘Words on Wheels’ makes weekly stops every Wednesday at Dogwood Park in Cookeville, Baxter City Park, and in Monterey.
