Putnam County will pay tribute to fallen servicemen and women during a special Memorial Day service Monday.
The event starts at 11 a.m. with U.S. Congressman John Rose serving as the guest speaker.
Mark Harris serves as the director of veterans services for Putnam County.
“It’s about paying respects and remembering the ultimate sacrifice our servicemen and women have given throughout our history,” Harris said. “We take that special time set aside by our nation to remember those fallen soldiers, those sailors, those airmen, those seamen. It’s a very significant and very emotional time.”
According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday in 1968 and was officially established on the last Monday in May in 1971. For nearly 100 years prior, communities would host their own memorial ceremonies on what was previously referred to as Decoration Day beginning in 1866.
