Tennessee Central Railway No Longer Visiting Monterey

The Tennessee Central Railway will no longer make bi-annual stops in Monterey.

City Culture Administrator Julie Bohannon said the announcement should come as no surprise.

“The train has been delayed through Cookeville for a couple of years now with slow orders for a couple of years now, and they have decided it is too long of a trip for the guests on the train and for the crew,” Bohannon said. “The last time they were here was in October, and it took nearly 14 hours roundtrip.”

The train usually stopped in Monterey each spring and fall, with the fall stop coinciding with the city’s Standing Stone Day festivities.

Bohannon said the train typically brings 500 people to town each fall.

“We had the event for 30 years before the train started coming,” Bohannon said. “We’ll still be doing it. We would love for the train to come, but if it can’t, we’ll continue as we always have.”

Bohannon said the town offers their thanks to the Tennessee Central Museum for visiting Monterey each year.
