Overton Commission To Consider Court Security Grant

Overton County commissioners will consider approving a Courtroom Security Grant during next Monday’s meeting.

County Executive Ben Danner said the courthouse has needed various security improvements for some time.

“These old courthouses are really not good for security measures,” Danner said. “They’re going to put a handicap ramp in and use one side of the building only for entrance into court. They’re going to put in a new panic system and some film over the windows that’s bulletproof. They’re also going to get radios for some of the court officers and have extras… That’ll just help secure the courtroom for everybody involved.”

The nearly $35,000 grant will require a 10 percent match from the county. The commission’s budget committee voted to accept the grant during their April meeting.

The courthouse was originally constructed in 1869.

The Overton County Commission meets Monday, May 13th inside the courthouse at 6 p.m.
