The Putnam County School Board has once again restricted new enrollment at all elementary schools.
Chris Pierce is the attendance supervisor for the Putnam County School System.
“Based on early enrollment numbers, I would like to make the following recommendations for your consideration,” Pierce said. “Freeze the priority 3 and 4 enrollments in all elementary schools, which basically restricts future enrollees for the 19 and 20 school year to priorities 1 and 2 only. Of course, those are students in the buildings now, students who live in the zone, and children of full-time Putnam County employees.”
A total of 698 students pre-registered for kindergarten during the early enrollment period. Pierce said as many as 200 additional kindergartners could enroll over the summer.
“The demographics study conducted a couple years ago had this incoming class of kindergartners at about 819,” Pierce said. “I would imagine that we’re probably going to outpace that a little bit.”
School board members also voted to allow 20 priority 4 students to enroll through a lottery at Capshaw Elementary School.
“The total kindergarten enrollees, including these 20, would still leave capacity for zoned students to enroll at Capshaw and enable current staff to address other class size issues,” Pierce said.
The board has also voted last week to continue a priority 4 enrollment restriction for Avery Trace Middle School. Pierce said students with priority 1,2, and 3 would still be allowed to enroll.
“With the Avery Trace lottery, they had 22 students to apply for that lottery so I do recommend that we allow those 22,” Pierce said. “The total enrollment, including these requests, will still leave capacity for additional zoned students to enroll when school starts.”
All other middle schools will be open to all priority enrollments until at least the first day of school.
