Crossville City Council has decided to hold off on giving incentives to a corporation looking to take over the old Kmart building.
City Manager Greg Wood provided three options for incentives, but Mayor James Mayberry said previous businesses haven’t received any incentives when locating in Crossville.
“Personally, I see that this company is gonna compete with at least 12 other businesses in town,” Mayberry said. “I don’t recall any of those businesses getting any special tax breaks when they started their business.”
The council tabled a decision until a later date but did vote to waive building permit fees for the business.
Councilman J.H. Graham has prosed giving the company a 50-percent Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) plan over 15-years. That proposal would require county approval and involve giving the building to the Industrial Development Board (IDB).
Councilman Rob Harrison said he wants more time to make a decision.
“I would like to unpack some of these things a little more and fully understand,” Harrison said.
Wood said the company expects to hire about 65 people, with an estimated payroll of $1.3 million.
