The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance wants residents to be mindful of potential flood repair scams.
Director of Communications Kevin Walters advises those affected by last week’s flooding to hire contractors with proper documentation.
“Always use a licensed contractor – ask for the necessary license and get the correct building permits,” Walters said. “Beware of people who are going to be preying on homeowners who have been affected by floods, who are going to be showing up at your door… and wanting to give you a really good deal, or so they say.”
Severe weather swept through the state last week, flooding several communities and roadways across the Upper Cumberland.
Walters said scammers usually target people who are recovering from natural disasters and severe weather.
“Unfortunately there are fly-by-night folks who are here to take advantage of people in these crisis situations,” Walters said. “We want to prevent that from happening. Don’t feel pressured to sign a contract with someone. Don’t give your money to someone you don’t know. Slow down, ask for references, get multiple bids.”
Homeowners who think they may have fallen victim to a scam should contact local law enforcement.
