The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed Dale Hollow Dam Road in Clay County.
County EMA Director Natalie Boone said saturated ground damaged the roadway but has had no effect on the dam itself.
“We had a small section break away yesterday on the south side of the dam,” Boone said. “This is in no way affecting the structural integrity of the dam. This is up past the dam itself. We patched it yesterday and was able to have one lane open. When the rain started again this morning, it fell in again but this time with a little bit larger section.”
The Clay County Highway Department will attempt to patch the road again Friday and Monday in hopes of reopening the road.
Boone said the county didn’t see as much rain Thursday evening into Friday as they had initially expected.
“We were lucky last night. We didn’t get a whole lot of rain last night, we got a little, but nothing that was enough to cause any major issues,” Boone said. “We’re just monitoring it today and hoping for the best, waiting to see how the rain coming in today is going to affect us. [We] expect to see some flooding issues in certain areas.”
A flash flood watch issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect in Clay County through Saturday night.
