PCSS Providing Meals to Students Thursday, Friday

Putnam County Schools will provide free meals to students and their families while the district remains closed for flooding.

Nutrition Field Manager Chrissy Flowers said meals will be provided Thursday and Friday while kids are out of school.

“We’re going to be offering a hot entree as well as a cold entree,” Flowers said. “People are allowed to come in and we’re going to be giving them an entree, we’ll have some fruit and vegetable plus their choice of milk. They’ll be able to come in and get a nutritious, warm meal.”

Meals will be provided at Baxter Primary, Monterey High, and Northeast Elementary School in Cookeville between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Flowers said providing the meals helps students temporarily who may not have as much access to food at home.

“We know that there’s a huge need for feeding the children in the Upper Cumberland area,” Flowers said. “We’re just really trying to take some of the stress and worries off of the parents. With kids being out of school, it does add to their grocery bills, and there’s such a struggle in our local area of trying to make sure the children are fed that hot nutritious meal.”

The district reports all meals will feature typical Super Snack offerings and will be free to students 19 and under. Adult family members may purchase meals on site for $3 each.
