Jackson Co. Hopes To Protect Flood Prone Areas

Jackson County has taken steps to hopefully keep rainfall from affecting flood-prone areas this week.

EMA Director Keith Bean said he’s especially concerned about water entering the rescue squad building and emergency operations center.

“A few months ago, there was like 12 to 14 inches of water in it. The ambulance service and 911 center had water up to the sidewalks,” Bean said. “It never did enter the building, but if it was to get there it would knock off all our communications. We’re trying to pre-plan for that and maybe get an emergency command center set up to where we can move it if we need to.”

Bean said the county began preparing for the incoming rain a few days ago.

“We’ve made some barriers and got sandbags to try and divert the water as best we can,” Bean said. “Of course, our rescue teams, fire, EMS and law enforcement are all on standby to do what we can.”

The Jackson County School System has taken steps to protect Gainesboro Elementary. Director of School Kristy Brown said flood waters entered the building nearly two weeks ago.

“In particular, sandbags are ready to place at Gainesboro Elementary School and storm drains are being checked and cleared if necessary,” Brown said. “Road conditions are always a concern and will be checked regularly throughout the week as well.”

Creeks and streams have already reached full capacity in Jackson County. Bean said any additional rainfall will likely cause flooding issues.
