The Upper Cumberland could see up to nine inches of rainfall over the next six days.
Meteorologist Rob Carolan said four separate weather systems will move through the Upper Cumberland between now and Sunday evening.
“We’ve already had between five and nine inches of rain over the state so far for the month and we may see another five to nine inches of rain through Sunday evening,” Carolan said. “It’s remarkable how persistent the storminess is going to be across the area.”
Carolan said he expects flooding to be an issue as each weather system taps into the Gulf of Mexico and brings heavy rain at times.
“The ground is saturated and the local rivers and streams can’t handle any additional water,” Carolan said. “So the problem is we’re going to see persistent flooding that just continues on into the early part of next week.”
Residents can expect rain and flooding to continue as the region begins to transition from winter to spring, Carolan said.
“That usually has the tendency to be a stormy period,” Carolan said. “so my guess would be, long range, we’re probably going to continue dealing with flooding issues around the region and across the state right into March.”
The first round of rainfall will begin Tuesday evening, followed by another wave of low pressure on Thursday. The third system will move through the area Friday.
Carolan said sunshine will make an appearance next week, which is when the latest latest weather pattern begins to settle down.
