Algood City Council has approved using the old city hall building as a business incubator.
City Administrator Keith Morrison said the business incubator proposal would allow the building to feature low rent prices for a period of time.
“That would allow business owners to update the building and make it usable to get a business off the ground,” Morrison said. “We could increase the rent incrementally once the business is up and running.”
Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said the proposal could bring a better draw to the downtown area.
“If we go with the incubator idea we might could apply for some grants that would help with the revitalization of downtown,” Chapman-Fowler said.
Morrison said a number of business owners have asked about using the facility. One resident approached the council on Tuesday night about a desire to open a music store.
Council members pointed out that the city could decide to sell the building at a later time. Morrison said the building’s tax appraisal is around $138,000.
Council voted unanimously Tuesday to use the building for the purpose of a business incubator.
